“Life is Strange” and reality

Computer game “Life is Strange” became for me the main game event of 2015. She turned out to be very interesting, atmospheric and an unforgettable adventure, to which I want to return more than once or twice.
However, I should admit that I also liked the game because I am almost at the same age as her main character, and some of her problems were similar to mine, as well as the reality in which I live. And in this regard, I decided to go further and compared Life Is Strange with what is happening in our world.

Episode 1- “Chrysalis” (Rus. “Chrysalis”)

1) The mysterious lighthouse that is fateful in nature.

The first location on which we find ourselves will give us a chance to see a lighthouse to which we will return more than once or twice. This is a special place in the game, but if we talk about lighthouses in real life, then there are not so many stories related to them. However, there is one worth your attention.
This story is not at all like Life Is Strange … Unless, there is a hurricane and a lighthouse, which bears directly key importance in the lives of these people. So!
The mysterious disappearance of the lighthouse caretakers on the island of Flannan.
According to the schedule, three rangers were to be constantly on the lighthouse. Another caretaker was at the coastal station in Bratsklit and at every flight to the islands replaced one of the caretakers. Upon arrival, the team and Joseph Moore immediately faced strange things. A naked flagpole was visible on the pier, there were no empty boxes designed to unload the provisions, and most importantly – no one thought of meeting them. The captain gave a sound signal, but none of the caretakers appeared.
At first, Moore was sent for intelligence, who discovered that the gates of the lighthouse, as well as all the doors, were locked. Opening them, he saw that the beds of the caretakers were not refueling, and the clock stopped. Returning and telling about what he saw, he received the sailors from the ship to the assistants, and the two of them returned back to the lighthouse. Their further search has revealed more and more confusing facts. The lighthouse lamps were cleaned and seasoned with fuel. All waterproof raincoats were in place. Given the bad weather, it is unlikely that any of the caretakers would dare to leave the lighthouse without them. The only sign of the mess was an inverted kitchen table. There were no things or signs indicating the place of stay of three caretakers.
A caretaker and three more sailors were left on the island. The ship itself returned back to the coastal station. Upon arrival, the captain of the ship reported:

The mysterious incident occurred on the islands of Flann. Three caretakers, James Dukat, Thomas Marshall and Donald MacArthur disappeared without a trace from the island. The stopped clock and other facts indicate that this happened about a week ago. Poor guys! At this time, people who remained on the islands explored every piece of land in the hope of finding any evidence that could shed light on what really happened on the island. I will not talk about the murders that took place in toilets in different countries of the world at different times, but I will give only one case of this.

Murder in Katsrin.

In 2006, the police found the body of a thirteen -year -old girl with traces of violence and numerous stab wounds in the toilet of the Nofei Golan secondary school in Katsrina (Israel). It would seem that all this exists only in fantastic films and all kinds of fantasies, however, as you probably already know, there are many theories regarding movements into the past. Now let’s proceed to the second entertaining fact or experiment.

Digging in the files of the rector, Chloe and Max find strange neutan-chanculi drawings, accompanied by the phrase “Rachel in the dark room”. Here the “dark room” means the developing. There is no seemingly surprising in this name, but I came across one mental experiment that seemed to me the most interesting. The room here is not dark, but black and white, but this is the whole essence of the experiment that makes you think about the difference between real experience and knowledge about what the experience should be. Imagine a black and white room where Maria, a specialist in vision neurophysiology, is sitting behind a black and white monitor. She never saw the color, but has the full information about the human reaction to it: she knows exactly what we experience when we see the blue sky or a scarlet rose. The question is whether Maria will find out something new if she sees the color herself?
This is another stone in the garden of physicists who believe that any knowledge is only knowledge of physical facts. However, some reputable philosophers (including the famous American cognitive Daniel Dennet) are of the opinion that a personal color experience is unlikely to surprise an omniscient scientist. But let’s start again with the events at Life is Strange.
At the end of the third episode, Max manages to move for 5 years to the past, on the day of the death of Father Chloe William and change the fate of all the characters of the game. Then he saw a driver sitting a few rows before him suddenly lost consciousness. And although the bus continued to go forward, the driver’s hands were no longer on the steering wheel. The vehicle moved independently, without control. The seventh grader was not at a loss, jumped up and grabbed the steering wheel, pointing the bus to the side of the road. Jeremy simply could not reach the pedals, this prevented him from stopping movement. But the teenager showed ingenuity, pulling the keys to the ignition lock. The rest of the teenagers immediately called 911. And another teenager, Johnny Wood, also became a hero, managing to make artificial respiration to the driver before the arrival of doctors.

Episode 4 – “Dark Room” (Rus. “Pressure”)

1)Murder out of pity. The fourth episode begins very tragic. At the very beginning, Chloe tells her friend that every day she gets worse, that she’s tired of giving a delay in her death, and she asks Max to kill her overdose of morphine. And the player has the right to kill Chloe. Of course, I will give a case like that from reality.
In August 2004, 17-year-old Christina Patrina and the 14-year-old Marta Shkermanov strangled a house neighbor-32-year-old Natalya Barannikov, paralyzed as a result of an injury in an accident. Then they strangled the woman with a rope.

2) This is a strange moon.

When Chloe goes to the “End of the World” party to take revenge on Neutan, another unusual phenomenon occurs in the sky – a double moon. This, of course, is the fantasy of the authors, but the moon is sometimes capable of improving the truth. I’m saying that there is the so -called “Illusion of the Moon”. 3) Continue the oddities. Only now it will be strange not the moon, but the barn. So what Strange barn I mean? He was sentenced by the California state by the death penalty on March 31, 2010 for the rape and murder of five women committed by him in the period 1977 – 1979., but later confessed to other rape and murders. His second name “The Dating Miller” (The Dating Game Killer) due to his participation in the American television show ‘The Dating Game’ in 1978. As it turned out at the trial, the killer “played” with his victims – he strangled them until they lost consciousness. He waited and when the victim came to his senses, strangled again and again, before, finally, he killed.
Alkala was a photographer and investigators found a collection of hundreds of photos of women and teenage boys from him.
Before the court, in April 2010, the Huntington Beach police department announced 120 women’s photographs once taken by Alcala to find out if there were no victims of abuse of this maniac among them. For several weeks, about 20 women who recognized themselves in the photo called on the phone left for communication.

Details of the murders committed by Alcala are shocking, because the maniac subjected victims to sophisticated torture and mockery. Two female corpses were found naked and in unnatural poses. According to forensic scientists, the criminal photographed victims after death.
The Supreme Court of County of the Orange (California) counted Alkala proven and handed him the most strict sentence: the death penalty by introducing deadly injection.

Katrina.
Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive in the history of the United States, as well as one of the 5 most deadly of the ever registered. More than 80% of the territory of the New Orleans was flooded with water. Hurricane happened in 2005 on the east coast of the United States. Despite meteorological reports, people simply did not have time to prepare for the disaster. The damage amounted to $ 80 billion, the hurricane took 1836 lives, 705 are still considered missing. About half a million were left without shelter. Moreover, approximately 80% of the new Orleans area was flooded. In addition, the marauders used the natural disaster, to whom the police were powerless. It is noteworthy that at this time the rating of President George Bush fell to 38%.

Mitch.
Hurricane, which was called Mitch, was held on the Atlantic basin in October 1998. Meteorologists appropriated him the fifth category, the highest. Gusts of wind then reached 320 kilometers per hour. Hurricane affected the territory of Nicaragua, Honduras and Salvadora. He completely devastated them and carried away the lives of 20 thousand people. Most people died from the mudflower streams, strong winds and tidal waves, which towered to 6 meters in height. More than a million people were left without housing, and hundreds needed drinking water and medications. This even led to an increase in infectious diseases.

San Kaliksto.
This hurricane is also called the great hurricane. This is a tropical cyclone of enormous power, which raged in the fall of 1780 near the Caribbean archipelago. He became the most deadly of all famous hurricanes. According to the documents of that time, it is known at least about 22 thousand dead, and maybe more. The great hurricane touched the island of the Caribbean basin, from the island of Newfoundland to Barbados, passed Haiti and destroyed up to 95% of all buildings. A tidal wave caused by a hurricane, like the most powerful tsunami, walked through some islands, sometimes reaching 7-8 meters in height. She demolished absolutely everything in her path. Many ships were flooded in the port bays, and in some distance from the shore. Including under the water, part of the French and English flotillas that took part in the US civil war. About a hundred ships in the water area of ​​the village. Eyewitnesses said that a strong wind broke the bark from the trunks of trees before tucking them. According to the conclusions of scientists, the wind speed was then at least 350 kilometers per hour.

The main blow of this hurricane fell on the United States. Camilla began as a tropical cyclone formed on August 5, 1969 off the west coast of Africa. On August 14 and 15, the zone of action of the whirlwinds expanded, and the wind speed increased to 180 km/h. Passing Cuba, the hurricane weakened a little: its speed decreased to 160 km/h. Meteorologists hoped that while the hurricane would move towards the south of the United States, it may weaken even more. But they were mistaken. As soon as Camilla crossed the Gulf of Mexico, the hurricane again gained strength. He was assigned 5 category. Before the hurricane fell on the state of Mississippi, on August 17, the meteorological service made an attempt to measure its speed, but to no avail. By the night of the same day, Camilla reached the city of St. Louis Bey in the state of Mississippi. The “eye of the storm” of the hurricane was 19 km. Having reached Virginia, the hurricane collapsed on the state with pouring rain. An unexpected amount of precipitation – 790 mm/hour – caused the strongest in the history of the state of flood. The real power of the hurricane is still a mystery. During his passage through the territory of Alabam and Mississippi, not a single meteorological device survived. Wind speed could exceed 340 km/h. 256 residents of the States of Alabam, Mississippi, Louisiana and Virginia were missing, of which 113 drowned during the flood in Virginia. More than 8931 people were injured. For Virginia, the flood was the most terrible disaster provoked by Camilla. The strongest showers caused mud landslides, the roads were blocked by fallen trees, blurred by streams of water, turning them into channels. More than 120 bridges, thousands of houses were destroyed by water. Material damage from the hurricane “Camilla” was estimated at $ 6 billion.

3) In the final, Chloe gives Max a picture of a butterfly taken in the toilet on the day when Max first prevented Chloe’s death. This butterfly, of course, hints at us at the famous term “Butterfly effect”, denoting the property of some chaotic systems: a slight effect on the system can have large and unpredictable consequences somewhere else and at another time.
